Creation of a 306-key hotel and conference centre for the Grand Mercure chain in Rio's Barra de Tijuca district
To accompany the 2016 Olympic Games and to enhance the hotel capacity of Rio de Janeiro, which hosts the entire world of sport, GL Events and Accor decided to build a luxury hotel: "Le Grand Mercure Riocentro". A 14 floors tower located next to the FIFA offices and the Olympic Village in the Barra de Tijuca district.
The Grand-Mercure hotel is located in Rio de Janeiro’s Exhibition Centre: the Riocentro, a true green lung. The hotel plot has its own entrance and a 190-space car park. A 20,000 sqm, 14-storey building with 306 rooms, including 6 suites, and a convention centre.
Particular attention has been paid to the volume and treatment of the building’s façades to ensure that it stands out from the other buildings on the site. A screen-printed curtain wall façade was created to give each room an unobstructed view of the site and its surroundings (mountains and lagoons). The two ends of the L-shaped building are punctuated by terraces organised like waves of different morphologies. The lower part of the building is painted blue, the same colour that is used on the inside walls, ceilings and corridors, as if to bring the sea into the hotel.
