Construction and interior design of the annex of the Centre Pompidou in Seoul
Born from a partnership agreement between the Centre Pompidou and the Hanwha Foundation, the new Centre Pompidou x Hanwha-Seoul will open in South Korea in May 2026. Each year for four years, two monographic exhibitions will be presented, featuring works on loan from the collection of the Musée National d’Art Moderne in Paris.
To host this new institution, Hanwha commissioned Wilmotte & Associés to renovate a 15,000 m2 site located at the base of the iconic 63 Building —the headquarters of the Hanwha Group—on Yeouido Island, in the heart of Seoul’s financial district.
In contrast to the tower’s verticality, the new Centre Pompidou’s 150-metre-long glass facade establishes an urban connection with the Yeouido district: backlit, it becomes a horizontal luminous landmark and a cultural beacon visible from the Han River.
On the first level, a peaceful and intimate sculpture garden offers a moment of respite within the intensity of the urban environment.
