Program

Renovation of the chapel, creation of an interior garden, construction of a new link between the chapel and the existing residence

Located at 34 rue du Montparnasse in Paris, close to preparatory classes and university faculties, “La Maison” is a residence housing young female students pursuing higher education in the capital. Wilmotte & Associés was commissioned to design an interior garden, renovate the existing chapel, and build a new connection between the chapel and the residence.

The project focuses on preserving key heritage elements, notably the chapel and the turret. In the basement, a computer room and a reading room—exclusively for residents—have been created.

The nave of the chapel has been shortened by one bay to make space for an office, while the sacristy is relocated to part of the building along the street façade. Despite its reduced size, the chapel retains its original function, with services reserved for the residents.

The chapel façades remain largely unchanged. Only the access door on the turret side has been widened to meet accessibility requirements for people with reduced mobility, as well as safety and civil protection standards.

The chapel roof has been fully refurbished and now incorporates photovoltaic panels. Light wells have also been created at the base of the chapel to bring natural light into the basement computer room.
