Program

Scenography for the exhibition "Treasures from the Wreck of the Unbelievable. Damien Hirst" at Palazzo Grassi Punta della Dogana in Venice.

The first major exhibition devoted to Damien Hirst in Italy since the 2004 retrospective, this exhibition presents "Treasures from the Wreck of the Unbelievable", Damien Hirst's most ambitious project to date.

This is the first time that the Pinault Collection has entrusted its two Venetian spaces, Palazzo Grassi and Punta della Dogana, to a single artist, offering an exhibition area of more than 5,000 square metres and enabling a dialogue between the works presented in the two spaces. It took the artist ten years to complete this extraordinary artistic project, in the literal sense of the word, telling the story of the ancient vessel ‘Unbelievable’ (Apistos in koinè Greek), its shipwreck and the discovery of its precious cargo: the impressive collection of Aulus Calidius Amotan, a freed slave better known as Cif Amotan II, destined for a temple dedicated to the sun.

Wilmotte & Associés designed every detail and created numerous previews of 190 works of art and as many precious jewel cases.

It was a long and fascinating job, designing the most minimalist display case, pedestal or mounting possible for each work.
