Rehabilitation and extension of an existing building, interior architecture, and museography
The future Al Mathaf Museum will house a major Moroccan collection dedicated to Berber culture—an essential part of the country’s history—as well as archaeological remains from the Mediterranean basin and Islamic art.
The project embodies Marrakesh’s role as a cultural crossroads and highlights the exceptional flourishing of both rural and urban cultures in Morocco.
Built on the site of an existing structure, the building designed by Wilmotte & Associés makes use of rammed earth and stone, echoing local materials.
Its large central courtyard, which separates the museum’s two wings, features a reflecting pool showcasing outstanding archaeological artifacts.
Enclosed by rammed earth panels, the courtyard gradually reveals itself from the street, through a sequence of spaces designed to evoke discovery and contemplation.
